Global Dignity Day Celebrated in Ankara and Istanbul

The Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) organized a number of activities in Turkey to mark the annual Global Dignity Day, which is celebrated with Global Dignity-led events around the world with the participation of 350,000 young people across 50 countries.

Young Global Leaders and other role models join thousands of volunteers to do Dignity Days. They speak to youth in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Their aim is to instill a new, positive, inclusive and interconnected sense of value in young people that will guide them as they grow.

As part of the global marking of Dignity Day on October 22, 2013, festivities kicked off at 11:00am of the local time of 50 countries. In Turkey, events were held in Istanbul with cooperation between the Intercultural Dialogue Platform (IDP) and Fatih College, and in Ankara with cooperation between JWF’s Ankara branch and Nevin Gokcek Girls’ High Schools.

The Istanbul event was held at the central campus of Fatih College; the Ankara event, at the Cankaya campus of Nevin Gokcek Girls’ High Schools.

Deputy Patriarch of Turkey’s Syriac Catholic Church Yusuf Sag talked to about 200 students in Fatih College’s conference hall while journalist and columnist Orhan Miroglu lectured to more than 300 students at Nevin Gokcek Girls’ High Schools.

Global Dignity Day was established to promote “Human Dignity and Justice for All,” inspired from the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Global Dignity Day has taken place on the third Wednesday of October every year since 2008 with participation of young people from around the world.
