Defying Adversity: Empowering Young Global Citizens to Lead

The Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) was proud to participate at the AFS Opportunities Fair on Saturday August 9, 2025. This year marked the milestone 30th edition of the AFS Youth Assembly hosted at the NYU Kimmel Center in New York City. The gathering convened hundreds of dynamic young delegates from over 80 countries, aged 18-35, united by their commitment to translating global challenges into tangible actions. 

The event offered an immersive program featuring more than 30 panels and sessions centered around four thematic tracks: Peace, Green Skills, Mental Health, and Women’s Leadership. Highlights included the Opportunities Fair, where prominent universities and global institutions showcased educational, career, and sustainable development opportunities; the SDG Zone, offering hands-on learning regarding the UN Agenda 2030; interactive platforms like Speed Skills Exchange and the Action & Impact Hub; and closing cultural festivities with poetry and music celebrating cross-cultural engagement.

AFS Intercultural Programs, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and the Permanent Mission of Malta to the UN co-hosted a vibrant International Youth Day gathering. AFS Youth Assembly delegates took part enthusiastically, as dynamic young voices shared insights on how the next generation is redefining multilateral diplomacy. By harnessing digital innovation and building cross-sector alliances, these young leaders are not only amplifying their perspectives but also fostering inclusive, impactful dialogue that transcends national, cultural, and institutional boundaries.

JWF Representatives and Summer 2025 Interns were thrilled to encounter with 150+ young visitors at the JWF Booth during the AFS Opportunities Fair. The team introduced variety of JWF programs and initiatives that the young professionals can participate on the sidelines of the United Nations platforms including: the flagship SDGs Conference 2025: In the Margins of the UNGA80, SDGs Roundtable Discussions, Pioneers in SDGs Award Ceremony, UN Commission on the Status of Women Panels. 

Young human rights advocates were also invited to apply to the JWF`s virtual certificate programs Media and Journalism Webinars and Global Youth Leadership Programme. Participants at the Opportunities Fair engaged in vibrant discussions with the JWF team in regard to the foundation`s working themes. Delegates from over 80 countries brought an impactful multicultural synergy, diverse perspectives, enriching discussions and fostering solidarity.
